Study by moweb research with the global research network IRIS: ‘Artificial Intelligence Perceptions’

Düsseldorf, 11 June 2026
In collaboration with the global network IRIS (Independent Research Institutes Network), moweb research conducted the international study ‘Artificial Intelligence Perceptions’. To investigate awareness, usage, knowledge and attitudes towards AI – in both professional and private contexts – just over 15,000 people were surveyed across 20 countries. In Germany, 1,000 participants took part, and their responses were collected by moweb.

Key findings of the study:

  • By the end of 2025, AI had achieved high global awareness (91%) and widespread use (73%), yet only 44% of respondents believe they understand how it actually works.
  • Young people (mainly those aged 30 and under) and the working population are the most optimistic about artificial intelligence. This is particularly true in the Asia-Pacific region. Perceptions are significantly more negative in Western Europe, particularly in Germany, Austria, Italy and Switzerland.
  • There are also significant differences in attitudes towards AI in the wider societal context (which is generally positive) compared with the respondents’ personal circumstances. After all, as many as 22% are seriously concerned about their jobs.
  • The most active users of AI are also the ones most concerned about losing their jobs: for example, creative and media professionals (90% usage, with 43% expressing concern) or millennials (81% usage, 28% expressing concern). Groups with less experience of AI, by contrast, show considerably less scepticism; for example, baby boomers, with 49% usage and 6% expressing concern. Experience with AI therefore reinforces negative attitudes rather than reducing them.

The study is based on a sample of 14,742 people from 20 countries in Western Europe, Central and Eastern Europe, the Asia-Pacific region, and North and Central America. The fieldwork took place in the fourth quarter of 2025. Up to 1,000 people per country were surveyed online, face-to-face or by telephone.
